Meet the Winemaker
Steve Chapin
Chapin Family Vineyards is one of a handful of the Temecula “boutique winery culture” that we feel can hold its own against the established vineyards
of Paso Robles. Steve Chapin owner/vintner has under five acres, located near Lake Skinner, and right across the street from Doffo Winery, the acreage of vines were planted back in 2002. In 2008 Chapin saw its first two releases….. a 2006 estate grown Syrah, and a 2006 estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon both found their way to CWM shelves and as Wine Club picks. Seeking only quality fruit, Steve says, “I estimate we drop 40-50 percent of our crop……” ;On the back of the wine label, Steve further says, “The
Chapin Family vines were farmed meticulously, maintaining the proper amount of
clusters for each individual shoot. This technique produces a very intense wine
that captures the flavors of our Temecula site.” Under the watchful eye of winemaker, Dr Enrique Ferro, “We use a destemmer, but not the crusher,” says Chapin. “Instead, we do whole-berry maceration
for more fruit character. and we ferment in open bins. And I keep the barrels
really topped up.” Chapinand his consultants, local winemaking consultant Enrique Ferro and
international viticultural consultant Marco Cavalieri monitor the success of each vintage and crop. Steve feels “investing in consultants is well worth the money,. trial and error is not the way to go.” (A winemaking friend recommended Ferro, and Ferro found Cavalieri in Argentina.) We are very excited to be the first to feature Steve’s inaugural release ofZinfandel. Many of our customers tasted his barrel samples at our and enthusiastically gave him the encouragement to “get it in the bottle” for release!!! We will be tasting the entire line-up of Steve’s wines Friday Night!
